Dates show as long numbers

Opening a .xls file from a PC shows dates correctly, but when I save it as a new [Mac] file dates show as long numbers even though show correctly in the input box. e.g., "7/15/2008 4:23:13 PM" displays as "39644.6827893518"

I think it has something to do with 1904 dating but I have 1904 Date System unchecked.

Any clues, please?

No, it does not have anything to do with the 1904 date option. It has to do
with the format of the cell. Make sure the cell is properly formatted as a
date and is not text.

Thanks bob, but yes, the columns are formatted as dates [the original file from the PC source had the dates okay]
