dates

When i open a blank worksheet and in any cell I type a
date for example 10/01/03 which would be oct. 1, if i look
at the format for that cell it shows it as a custom date
and aligns it correctly to the right but it in dd/mm/yy
(Jan 10/03) It is picking this up auotmatically from
somewhere I can't seem to see where this is set. Also if I
type a date 10/15/03 (oct 15) it comes up as a general
format and aligns it to the left. I believe some sort of
default has been changed. Let me know your thoughts.

Assuming you are using windows, start>settings>control panel and regional settings
when it left aligns it is text because it can't understand month number 15, even though you see it as
jan 10, excel most likely see is as Oct 10

try this formula

=DATE(2003.10,1)

if it returns 01/10/03 you have the regional settings as dd/mm/yy

Check you regional settings on your PC for dates. Under
WinXP, it's Start > Settings > Control Panel > Regional
and Language Options.

This wouldn't be an issue if the rest of the world would
just follow the American standard. ;-)
