dates

How do I get rest of the world dates on xl.
ie
13/4/03
not
4/13/03

It depends on whether you mean globally (in every worksheet of every
workbook), or in a specific range of cells of a particular workbook.

For the first one (which I assume to be the case considering that
you're from up in Banana country north of the border), go to your
Windows Start menu -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Regional Settings
and change the date format in there. (Changing your region to English
(Australian) should be enough.) That will flow through to Excel.

For the second one, just format those cells using a custom format like
dd/mm/yy.

The files probably corrupt (if it is really an .xls file).

If you have xl2002, you might be able to attempt to repair it.

I think this answer may have been intended for the earlier "problem in
opening *.xls file" thread?
