Dawing canvs - good or bad

A statement rather than a question, in view of users
difficulties with the drawing canvas...

I find the Drawing Canvas very useful and a big
improvement to drawing compared to previous Word versions
which didn't have it. By putting lines, boxes, etc on the
drawing canvas, I find that they don't move around
relative to one another if you add text into the document
before the drawing canvas. Do the same without the drawing
canvas, and all sorts of nasty things can happen, eg if
you use snap to grid, if after doing some drawing you add
some text before your drawing, you find that any new
lines, etc, that you add to the same drawing snap to a
different grid that is no longer aligned with the previous
grid, so line end points no longer match up - very
frustrating.

I suppose that the mistake that MS made was to enable it
by default. If they hadn't done that, people using
previous verions of Word wouldn't object so. Having said
that, if it wasn't on by default, users would not
(eventually) get to appreciate the improvements that the
drawing canvas brings.

Does anyone else agree with me?

Hi John

I find the canvas *really useful* when I happen to want to position several items relative to one another. And I find it *really
annoying* when I just want to put one (eg) text box somewhere in a document. I still haven't worked out whether I prefer to have the
default on or off!

Hope this helps.

Hello!

Please help...I have been trying to figure out how to turn
off this drawing canvas. It seems from the below
conversation there is a 'default' of some sort. How can I
get to this default to disable it so this stupid canvas
doesn't show up every time I click a drawing object!

Thanks!

Hi Suzanne,

You can turn off the drawing canvas through the setting
in Tools=>Options=>General (at the bottom).

This sounds like a good compromise, but it's also useful to know you can
dismiss it with Undo.

Hi Shauna,

I went with 'off' as the default and use the
Insert=>Picture=>New Drawing icon added to toolbars
to pop up a drawing canvas (or MS Draw depending on
the version of Word <g>) when I need it.
