day and date

P

Pamela Frankel

Hi. I am trying to enter the day of the week and the date of that day.
I have read all the instructions in the help menu about Excel Windows
vs. Mac 1900 and 1904 serial number system. I am on a Mac and have tried
to use Day and Date in both formats with no luck. I have also read
everything I could find about weekday, date, etc.

So, my question...how do I put the day of the week and date into a cell?
In other words...how do I achieve, for example, Thurs July 5.

Many thanks. Pam

Hi Pamela,

Q: How do I put the day of the week and date into a cell?
A: You only need to enter the date into the cell. To get the day and date to
display, select the cell, use Format|Cells|Custom from the menu and enter
'ddd MMMM d' into the 'Type' box.

I hate to be picky, but this is not possible with a just custom format.
Formatting the day as "ddd" will result in Thu, not Thurs as Pam requested.
Formatting it as "dddd" will result in Thursday. So, the answer is good in
that it allows Pam to learn about and "play" with custom formatting, it does
not produce the exact result she requested.

Hi Bob,

True, custom formatting gives the option of 'Thur' (ddd) or 'Thursday'
(dddd), but not 'Thurs'.

If the OP simply wants to delete the 'day' part of the word, a formula is
required. For example:
=SUBSTITUTE(TEXT(A1,"dddd MMMM d"),"day",)
but 'Wednesday' and 'Saturday' end up as 'Wednes' and 'Satur', which looks
odd.

Cheers
