Dcoument Style has bulleting, but underlying template style is not numbered :S

Hi all

I'm puzzled by why a paragraph style (called "Picture") suddenly appears to
have a bullet appearing on it. The problem occurs to all paragraphs
formatted as Picture.

The problem occurs when updating the styles in an existing document (I tick
'automatically update styles, save the document, re-open it, then un-tick
the setting, then save again).

The corresponding style in the underlying template does NOT have bulleting
applied to the Picture style, nor is it part of any list.

The Picture paragraphs in the document do not have any direct formatting
applied to them.

If I use the organiser and copy Picture from the template to the document,
the problem is fixed, but if I clear formatting on a picture paragraph
(ctl-Q) then the bullet re-appears.

Also, if I create a NEW document based on the template, the problem does not
occur.

It's some type of a style update problem, but I just can't figure it out.
Any words of wisdom would be welcome!

Background:
The template was prepared in Word 2000 SP3. The Picture style is based on no
style, and has only paragraph formatting defined. No number formats are
defined.

The destination document was prepared in Word 2003.

G'day "Nick Murray" <[email protected]>,

When you set Auto update styles, any change to the style, such as
inadvertently adding bulleting, will immediately ripple out to the
style definition and change the implementation of the style throughout
your doc. Thus, avoid that setting and ensure styles are set to the
definitions you require.

Is the Picture style applied to some text in the template? If it is,
what happens if you create a new document from the template, select
that text and press CTRL+Q (which resets paragraph formatting,
including bullets and numbering, to style)? If the bullet reappears,
the bullet formatting is in fact in the definition of the Picture
style in the template, and you need to remove it.

The straightforward way to remove bullet or numbering formatting is
the following: Open the template as a document and modify the Picture
style not to include any bullets. Save and close the file.

If the straightforward way doesn't work, you could try recreating the
style to have the desired formatting in another document (which
doesn't use the template in question) and then copy it back into the
document and template using the Organizer, confirming the message to
overwrite. Note that it is possible that this is a sign of corruption,
which might need further attention.
