DDE issue

I was trying to use Mail merge with Word 2000 using a
database created in Access 2002 as the data source. The
error message said:

"Word could not re-establish a DDE connection to Microsoft
Access to complete the current task."

Is there something missing that needs to be installed?

I was able to access the database using the option "MS
Access Databases via ODBC" but for some reason this only
gave me access to data in Tables, whereas I wanted to take
the data from a Query. Is it possible to connect with a
Query in ODBC?
