Debug Error Message in Word 2002 Related to Runtime

J

Jim G

Hi:

When exiting Word 2002 I get the following message:

Debug error!

Program: C:\......WINWORD.EXE

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual
way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

Also, when I reopen Word, it hasn't stored the names of the most recent
files I've saved to click on easily under the File menu to reopen them
without having to search my hard drive for the files.

I tried using the Help>Fix and Repair feature but I still have the problem
after doing this.

Do you have any suggestions for me?

Thanks.

Jim

Terry:

Are you saying that I should try some of the debugging procedures on that
page for problems with opening Word? Or that there are procedures on that
page for problems with closing Word, too?

I don't see anything on that page that specifically addresses the exact
problem I am having, both in opening and closing Word.

Please let mem know.

Thanks.

Follow everything in the FAQ as some of the opening errors may also be
responsible for closing errors. Typically, I expect that you have a third
party add-in that is replacing Word's Close command but is incompatible with
your version. Follow the FAQ and it should find the problem.

OK, Terry. Thanks.

I'll try it.

One of the recommendations on that page you sent me to tells me to rename my
normal.dot file to normal.old. But when I search my hard drive for the
normal.dot file the file cannot be found.

Could this be part of the problem and if so what do you recommend I do now?

Thanks.

Open Windows Explorer and go into Tools, Options and make sure that show
system files is enabled and that hide file extensions of registered file
types is is disabled.

I've got a Normal.dot file, another Normal.dot file that's actually a
shortcut, and a ~$Normal.dot file.

I tried renaming the two Normal.dot files to Normal.old but they reappeared
again later on. And then I had a lot of temporary files appear in My
Documents when I did that also.

What should I do?

Thanks.

The shortcut is created for use by the History or Recent Documents; it's
normal. ~$Normal.dot is the "owner" file created when you start Word; it
should be deleted when you quit Word. If it's not, you can delete it. The
only one you need concern yourself with is the true Normal.dot file.

Also, when all applications are closed, go to the Documents folder and
delete all the abandoned temporary files.

Then go to the user's temp folder (normally located in Documents and
Settings, username, Local, Temp) and delete all the temp abandoned files in
there too. The temp folder should be empty when no applications are running:
you may have to reboot to clear all these.

Thanks for your input.

What exactly is Runtime? I just remembered that the first time this problem
began happening was immediately after I updated my Adobe Acrobat Professional
software up to its version 7.0.9. So something must have happened right at
that time.

Do you know of any problems like this that have happened before between
Actrobat and Word?

Thanks.

There are chronic conflicts between Word (various versions) and Acrobat
(various versions), so it could well be the Acrobat add-in that's causing
the problem, and in fact it would appear to be. I searched the KB for your
error message and turned up http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=906899, "Word
does not save changes or you receive an error message in an Office program
after you install Adobe Acrobat 7.0." Wrt an update, I think one may well be
available.

Suzanne:

Thanks for your response and this bulletin from Microsoft on the problem.
I've just posted an inquiry in an Acrobat forum with a link to this bulletin
asking if anyone knows of any patches or fixes for the problem available for
the Acrobat program itself.
