Default Asian Font Problem

Tom Cook

I'm using Word X.

I've localized word to Japanese using the Language Resister and so
when I start word with a new blank document it comes up ready to write
in Japanese, this is great! However, the default japanese font that
comes up "M S myouchou" (in japanese) does not display well on my
screen and i would like to use another, so i've been changing it each
time I enter the program.

I tried going to Format > Font and selecting an asian font I like and
pressing Default... to set this as the standard font, however now, not
only does it still say the old font when I open the program, but it
wont let me change to the font I selected to be the default, either
from the toolbar or the font menu. I can choose other asian fonts,
but not the one i want, it switches to it, then immediately back.

The only way it seems I can do it is to type something, then select
it, then change its font, but if I move off the text, or delete
everything I've written, it pops back and refuses to change.

I've tried editing the font of the Normal Style from the
Format>Style... item, and it even lists the correct font in the style
description once i've changed it, but once i go back to editing a
file, its the same old thing. I even tried deleting my Normal
template and letting Word create a new one hoping it would go back to
how it was, but not luck.

Any help would be much appreciated,
-Matthew

Tom:

That sounds as though the font you are using contains characters that are
not in the Mac International Character set.

In which case, this is what Word does. It cannot handle Unicode, and
reverts to the Mac character set each time.

The work-around you have discovered is the only one we know of.

Be one of the first to buy the next version: it's fixed in Word 2004.

Cheers
