Default auto canvas setting

Hi...
Is there a way to set the default for the auto-canvas to "off" in Word 2003?
Each time I create a new document and access the drawing tools a drawing
canvas automatically displays. I prefer not to use this and have to turn it
off in Options each time. My normal template is not set to display the auto
canvas. Why does it keep popping up?

Hi Diane,

Yes, you can uncheck the drawing canvas setting in Word 2003 in
Tools=>Options=>General

The option is stored in the registry, rather than in the Word template. It's possible that you have a corrupt registry key for Word
options or that your user profile isn't able to write to the registry, or (if in a corporate setting) that things are set to go back
to their 'defaults' each time you start Word.

I'm not in a corporate setting so it's not being reset. I'm in a home office
as a sole-proprietor. How can I make my user profile write to the registry?

How can I find out if my registry key is corrupt? Can it be replaced or
fixed? I've run Detect and Repair in the past but it hasn't helped.
