Default beggining date in Updates section

We recently upgraded to MSPS 07.

I'm getting some questions about how the 'Task Updates' page determines what
date to start with. I thought it would default to the earliest date on which
someone has provided an update but I'm seeing that is not always the case.
Obviously we have the option of declaring the date range in the View Options
but I wondered what drove it otherwise?

Does anyone know? Thanks in advance.

I believe it defaults to the Start date of the earliest-starting task that
was updated. For example, assume that a team member is assigned to a task
with 20 days Duration, beginning on a Monday of three weeks ago. The team
member has submitted tasks updates each of the first three weeks, and each
update was approved by the PM. After submitting the update on the fourth
week, when the PM goes to the Task Updates page to view the update, he/she
will see the start date of the timesheet grid on the right as the Monday on
which the task orginally started, which now would be four weeks in the past.
Does this description square up with what your people are seeing? Let us
know.
