Default Category Permission

Hi,

In the Microsoft Administrators Guide, there is an Appendix D which
reviews the default settings for both Groups and Categories. I found
it confusing in some cases, like My Organization for example. For My
Organization, the default groups Administrators, Execs, Portolio
Managers, Project Managers and Resource Managers are assigned. There
is a table that lists the default category permission settings which
shows all functions Allowed. What baffles me is how they can state
those default settings without specifying which User Group we are
talking about. Does this imply that the default is supposed to be all
Allowed for *every* group (admin, exec, resource, etc)??

They seem to ignore the fact that it is a security matrix which makes
it confusing. I'm just trying to reset some of my permissions back to
the out-of-the-box settings to clean things up now that I understand
them a bit better.

Thanks,

Paul

You are correct about how the category permissions are presented for each
security Group in the Project Server 2003 Administrator's Guide. For the
Project Managers group, for example, the author should have shown separate
tables for both the My Projects and My Organization categories. This
section is poorly written, and I would not rely on it if I was you.

For a complete treatment of Project Server security, inlcuding the default
permissions for Categories and Groups, you might consider purchasing our
book for Project Server 2003 administrators, available by clicking the URL

Within My Organization, the Groups Executives, Portfolio Managers,
Project Managers etc, can have different permissions.

The security matrix exists, but is difficult to "see" from the
description in the Microsoft Admin Guide.

It helps to envision it if you have access to the "old" (for Project
Server 2002) EIF process, which included a workbook that includes a
page that shows the matrix.

If you don't have it, I can send you an extract of mine that includes
that information. My notebook has the default settings. You can email
me at mark dot everett at gmail dot com.
