Default "Do Not Spell Check" won't turn off

In Word 2003, my spell checker will not check documents made on that machine.
The "Do Not Spell Check" feature in the language dialog box is always
checked. I've tried unchecking it, clicking "Default" to make the unchecked
"Do Not Spell Check" as the default setting, but it always reverts back to
that box being checked. I've tried doing CTRL+A to highlight the entire
document, Tools/Language/Set Language, unchecked "Do Not Spell Check" and
still the result is "The spell check and grammar check is complete," despite
numerous mistakes throughout the document. Any ideas on how to end this
problem? Thanks.

There may be more than one issue here, but first, do you have Adobe Acrobat
installed (the full writer version) or some other add-in that is stopping
Word from saving custom changes?
