default fields

I'm new at this.

I’ve designed a template that has a “defaults†section followed by repeating
sections that contain controls.

I’ve configured one of the controls in the repeating section so that its’
default value is “linked†to the value of one of the controls in the default
section. By “linked,†I mean that I did not copy the value from the default
section. Rather, in the properties dialog box, I clicked on the function
symbol next to the “value†edit box and selected the appropriate default
control field. The idea is that users are presented with the default, but
they can overwrite it.

What I expected is the following:

When I fill out a form from scratch, every time I create a new repeating
section, the control I described above should be filled with the value from
the default section. Indeed, this happens.

Now, when I open an XML document created by using the template in an XML
editor (like XML Spy), I can see the values in the repeating sections that
were left as default as well as those that were overwritten.

However, when I open that same XML document in InfoPath, all of the fields
in all the existing repeating sections have been given their default values.

How do I tell InfoPath to use the default ONLY if the XML it is reading has
no value for that field? I need to be able to open and close the XML
multiple times without having to re-enter fields where the defaults have been
overwritten.

Thanks in advance,
