Default Filename

When I open a new document it shows up as ³Document2² or ³Document3² but
when I Save it for the first time the default filename is always
³échange.doc² - it's done this ever since I worked on a document I
received with the language set to French Canadian.

It's done it through successive iterations of OSX (I'm now on 10.5,
latest update) and on two computers.

What is the usual default filename, and how can I change to that?

I have no idea how it may have happened, but it sounds like that file name
has been saved into the Title Property of your Normal.dotm or Normal
template - it depends on which version of Word you're using, but you don't
bother to mention that little detail :) You should find the solution here
by either editing the Normal? file or by replacing it as per:

The "Default" file name of a document that has NEVER been saved is as much
of the first line of text in the document as will fit, up to the first
illegal character (e.g. A slash or colon or period).

If the document contains no text, the default file name is "Document 1.docx"
or whatever you are up to since you started Word.

Cheers
