Is there any way to permanently set the default document font to anything else than TimesNewRoman in Mac Office 2008? I have also the problem, that every text I enter is entered in TimesNewRoman, even if it is in the middle of an existing text formatted with some other font. This is really annoying. Any help would be appreciated.

You need to modify your styles (I woudl guess Normal in this case).
You can edit them and adjust them to suit your needs and make sure all
modifications are saved to the Normal template.

Use the formatting palette to modify the styles. In Edit mode, the pull
down menu on the bottom right allows you to toggle what you need to
modify (eg: paragraph spacing, etc). The Add to template button will
save these changes back to the Normal template for you.

You can repeat that for all the styles you use.

Thanks for your reply, Corentin, but I think my problem is a bit more complex (I tried what you suggested, but the behavior is as follows -I simply can not enter any text using any font other than TNR; every time I set the desired font in the Formatting Palette and I start typing, the font setting immediately turns back to TNR. As a result, TNR is the only font I can use for typing, while the already entered text can be changed to any font of choice. I am wondering what I am doing wrong...?

There is really something fishy then.
Either a pref is corrupted, or you have a nasty font issue.
You could use a free app such as Onyx to clear all font cache (and
reboot immediately) to see if it corrects the issue,

Forget the formatting palette :) That's for making local overrides to
correctly-defined fonts.

Corentin was talking about getting your styles correct to begin with.

However, I must first ask what language your OS is set to, and what language
you are typing in, with which keyboard? There's a strange interaction there
we may need to track down.

My first suggestion would be to quit Word and drag your Normal.dotm to the
desktop. Then use Spotlight to find anything else called "Normal" and drag
it to the desktop too.

When you restart Word, it will create a new default Normal.dotm. All the
styles should be set to use Cambria or Calibri in new documents you create.

See if that works...
