default header footer dramas

I am having problems changing / removing the default
headers in every new document i open. The header seems to
be default set to about half the page. I have tried to
use the microsoft help function but following it's
instructions i have had no luck what so ever. Is there
some way i can change this so it is set to about 1 to 2
cm on the top and also so it stays that way.
