Default indents for Numbering button in Formatting toolbar

Hello folks

MS Word 2000, MS Word 2002

I wish to change the default indent values (in the ruler)
when the Numbering button (in the Formatting toolbar) is
pressed.

I can easily change the default indent values for the
Bullet button. Also can change the default indent values
for the Numbering and Outline Numbering options under
Format | Bullets & Numbering.

But - cannot figure out how to apply different default
indent values to the Numbering button itself.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Brenda

As you've discovered, the Numbering button is not
reliable. Instead, for single-level numbering, apply one
of the predefined Numbered List paragraph styles; these
are formatted with different indent settings. If none of
them suits your needs exactly, pick the one that most
resembles what you want and modify it.

In Word 2000, to apply a style, use the Format > Style
dialog box, which also enables you to make changes, if
necessary. If you feel that you need to learn about
styles, see:

If you need information about outline numbering (that is,
multi-level numbering, including heading numbering), also
see:
