Default language in Word v.x

T

Tom Kay

The default language continuously reverts to U.S. English no matter how many
times I change the default to U.K. English.

Can anyone help, this is annoying.
Thanks folks

There are at least three places where the language is set
In OS X International prefs (I am not sure that Word cares, but since I
had little trouble when I installed it, I assume it looked at least
once.)
In Word Tools->Language,
and in normal.dot and any templates you use style definitions.
If the normal style has the wrong language, and you have a host of
styles based on Normal style while it was set to US English, then you
will have to go through the lot changing their language back to UK
English too. Muppets!

err. Maybe I am being harsh. Is there a way to push a style's property
like language to all the styles based on it instead of Word having a
frenzy of explicitly pushing the old property down the hierarchy?

Errr. lemme break the habit of a lifetime...

no, it is a fine habit. There is nothing useful in help.

Don't forget, that after changing the language back to English (UK) in
every goddamn style, you must check update template before closing the
modify panel.

Don't you just love the way that the current style and language is just
off the top of each panel?

Oh, and when you quit Word, don't forget to let it update normal.

I have just been eating my own advice. I now have even my heading
styles back in UK English Grrrr! What a pain!

This one is simply not used by Office. It only affects packaged
applications that can switch user interface dependingon what language is
selected (OK there are a few more things, but it still doesn't affect
the language for Office).

That's what I suspect. The language has to be changed for the Normal.dot
template. This works just fine (I sue Office US and thatks to Normal, my
documents are in French by default).

Elliott, I find language propagates...am I not understanding you? Word
2001, quick test in a doc only, changes not saved to template. Changed
language for DissFont. DissText and Footnote Text are based on DissFont,
and also picked up the language change. Normal should behave the same way,
for any style defined as "Normal+", or does it not? Tricked me at first
because it doesn't show up in the style definition, but the language
definitely changed.

Sadly, mine chose the exact opposite behavior. Almost very style was
ultimately based on normal. All of them were silent on language. Except
Normal was English (US). I changed normal to English (UK) Every other
style then explicitly claimed English (US) to be part of their style. I
had to change every one by hand.

Tested again in a newly created template, using Normal, and checking "add to
template". Still worked in 2001. Perhaps a bug in X? Seems awfully huge
for them to have missed, though. Does nothing propagate, or is the problem
just with Language settings? Maybe try testing in a fresh template, just in
case?

That last was good advice. My normal.dot appears to be unwell. A new
template created from another that has been working well propagated
changes to normal style as you described. Even the language setting.
Yet nothing propagated to styles based on Normal when I changed
Normal's normal style.
What do you think. Is this a good time to trash normal and to see if
the organiser works?

I think so. First I shall quit Word and rename normal.dot to abnormal.
It seems fitting.

I may be gone some time.....
