Hi all,

I have been using the Print Layout (third button from left in the
status bar) and Page Width for my Word 2000 ever since I started using
it...

I receive a lot of documents from other people that use a different
default setting, most of them Normal layout, and ever time I have to
close Word, reopen it and reset MY parameters. I have tried making
normal.dot read-only, but to no avail... is there a way to stop other
documents from changing my default view parameters or, better yet, is
there a way to force all documents to open in any certain default
view?

Ciao, Lupo

Opening a document in Normal view should not affect your default settings,
but they do not apply to other people's documents. Every document will open
in the view in which it is saved. If you want to be able to view that
document in a different view, you must not only change the view but also
make some other change, then save. See
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/General/SaveViewAndZoom.htm.

I can guarantee you that opening a document in normal view, closing
Word and reopening it will show a blank page in normal view, even
though normal.dot was saved in page view... Ever time I have to reset
it to page view, close, reopen and then it's ok...

When you close Word in Normal view, you are writing that change to
Normal.dot. Word will always open in the same view in which it was closed,
but if you open a document saved in Print Layout view, it will open in Print
Layout view regardless of the view in Document1. If you start Word only to
open a document and then close it, then you are going to experience this
behavior. I open Word first thing in the morning, type one space into
Document1 to keep it open, and don't quit Word till I go to bed at night, so
I don't have any problems with changes in view (though I do have some
bizarre Zoom effects in opening some documents).

Copy the macro and name the copy

Sub AutoOpen ()

i.e. you have both an AutoOpen and an AutoNew macro containing the line:

ActiveWindow.View.Type = wdPrintView
