default locations for saving/opening files

A lot of times, I need to clone a file, so I open it and
then do a "Save As" to save it under a different file
name. Unfortunately, the default location that it will
save the file to is different from the location from
which I opened the original file. Any suggestions?

You can change the default folder for Word in File Locations in the
Preferences dialog box found in the Word menu.

Yes. Just duplicate the file in Finder (Command + D) and rename it.

I think this is a common complaint, so send Feedback from the Help menu that
it bothers you.

You can change the default location for saving documents in Prefs (probably
not helpful). In addition (if X still has a Favorites folder), judicious
use of the Favorites folder can reduce the annoyance factor, since the Save
dialog does have a dropdown for Favorites, giving you one-click access to
commonly used folders (if you set up Favorites that way). I believe there's
also a clock for recently accessed folders, although mine never works.

Among other suggestions, I' advise a very helpful
shareware, specifically designed for that purpose :
Default Folder : http://www.stclairsw.com/

I've tried doing that. In Word, I go into preferences and
choose last folder used by application. I open the
desired file using file, open, etc. But when I do a save
as, the directory is not the same as the one I just
accessed. It appears to be the second to last directory
used (from a prior session). I made sure that the file
location set by the general controls in the extension
manager is set to directory last used by application. I'm
still stumped. It's a nuisance more than anything. I did
not have this problem with the previous version of Word.

They changed the default behavior--many many people have complained. Add
your voice by Sending Feedback under the Help menu.
