Default mode of Fields

Since a couple of weeks all my documents open with the
Fields in the 'definition' (e.g. {TOC \t "Heading
1,1,Heading 2,2, etc. etc. etc.}) mode,

To get to a more readable version, I first have to Toggle
the Field Code for the whole document.

How do I turn this back? I cant find any option connected
to this type of view.

As Graham says, Word should be opening in the same state in which you closed
it, but sometimes it's balky. For such cases, see
