Default printer selection dropping

I have 2 printers attached to my computer a HP via usb connection and a Star
laser via a serial conncector. The former is set as the default printer in
start/settings/printers but suddenly whenever I open word to print a
document the Star Laser is offered.
Can anyone help me please? Is this a Word problem or a WindowsXP problem?
