Is there a way to change the default settings for:

1. Insert cross-references

Most of the times I need to cross reference to a 'figure'
or a 'table',never to a 'numbered item'. Also I never want
to insert them as hyperlinks and I always want to
insert 'Only label and number', never the 'Entire caption'.

2. Insert frame

The border default is 'Box' , I always want 'None', the
default is 'Move with text', I never want it to 'Move
with text', the default 'Text
wrapping' is 'Around', I always want 'None'.

How do I change these defaults. I've tried to save these
settings in a
template, but it just doesn't work.

Short of some heavy-duty VBA, I don't believe there's any way to accomplish
what you want, but you could save a sample frame, formatted according to
your preference, as an AutoText entry.
