Default Table Styles for Template

I've been trying desperately to figure out how to make a new default table style for a template. I want a highly customized table that will be the DEFAULT table inserted when a user adds a table. The table AutoFormat window doesn't offer any means to customize the table before adding it, nor is there a way to add an existing customized table to the AutoFormat list. I know that you can add customized table styles to the table autoformat list in Word 2007 - how do I accomplish the same in word 2008?

Here's the layout I'm trying to make.

What I want is to type a question, then click insert table and have that table style appear. The first column must be numbered, and the values are to be bolded and a larger size. You'd think it would be simple to make a default table style, but it's proving to be incredibly complicated. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Have a look at page 65 in the notes published by Clive Huggan. Although the
comments precede Office 2007/8 I don't know that the pitfalls & aggravation
of Table Styles have been vanquished in the newer versions - especially if
there's ever a need to save the document in the .doc format:

Sadly, you are quite correct!

Word 2008 has the obsolete Word 2003 Table Style Mechanism that doesn't
work.

Table Autoformat does not allow you to choose any of the table styles YOU
have created as the default for a new table. It restricts you to the garish
built-in styles.

In Word 2003, I use a macro to explicitly format a table the way I want to,
but of course you can't do that in Word 2008 either.

Sorry...
