Hi John,
I did some experiments but was not able to find the default template,
either.
Actually, what I was looking for was the default Theme, which would
probably have a .thmx file for 2008.
What I recommend is that you create a presentation with the settings you
desire and then do the following:
On the formatting palette, in the Document Theme section, click the Save
Theme button.
That will take you to the My Themes folder.
Give the presentation a name that is short and starts with the letter A,
or just call it A so that it is always the first one in the list of
available themes.
Save it in My Themes
Themes that are saved in My Themes (not a subfolder) are listed in
Project Gallery as soon as you click My Themes under Categories. If you
are accustomed to using Project Gallery to open all your files, this is
a great option, as it involves no extra clicks at all to use the theme.
These themes are also automatically listed in the Elements Gallery on
the Slide Themes > Custom Themes tab.
Your custom theme can also be applied using the Brqose button on the
Slide Themes tab of the elements gallery and from the Browse button on
the Formatting palette in the Document Theme section.

Hi Glenn,
Other people have been asking about this too -
no answer so far. I've tried Googling around
and combing through the PowerPoint help,
but nothing there either so far, at least not
for PowerPoint 2008.
You can create custom blank PowerPoint templates and then
load them via Project Gallery, BTW. It requires
a few extra clicks, but it works.
