Default Threading in Entourage 2004

While I like the new threading feature in Entourage 2004, I really HATE that
in threaded view all of the threads seem to open in a default expanded
display. I want them opening in collapsed view, but I can't find anything to
change the default. Am I missing something in the preferences?

Hmmm, this isn't such a hot topic, I gather. While waiting for someone to
suggest an answer (i.e., whatever it is that I must be missing), I played
with the Arrange By commands in the Entourage Edit menu, particularly Edit
Custom Arrangements. This let me set up a rule for messages threaded by
subject, with the messages collapsed in the subject pane. Entourage seems to
remember this when you Quit and restart.

Sorry no one responded to you. And, yes, you found the correct solution on
your own. Congratulations. Although, you shouldn't call it a "rule" as
that is something else entirely. What you set up was a custom view
preference.

It's not a "custom view preference" either: custom views in Entourage are
something else entirely - although that's descriptive and close enough.
"Custom Grouping Arrangements" is the rather awkward name for what this is.

A CGA (pronounced seega) is is, then. A simple setting in the
Preferences--"Display Threaded Messages [] Expanded [] Collapsed"--would
have been much simpler. The Help menu hinted at this, but was sparse about
examples.

Oh, well, it's better threading than used to be present. Thanks for
replying.
