default value

I have a text field [Operator} in my table and when I try
to set the default value to "?" either in the table or a
form, Access automatically encases the question mark in
brackets. Is the problem the ? or the name of the field or
what else might cause this behavior?

I tried it to see what would happen. If I type in the ? by itself Access
adds the brackets, but if I type in the ? with quotes around it, Access will
leave it alone and it works.
