Hi--
I have a new MacBook. The resolution is high making the print too small
for my older eyes to see easily. I have changed the screen resolution
but then not all of the screen is visible. I would like to have the
resolution set higher but then have the default zoom when in word at
"page widlth" without having to go in everytime and change the
settings. I have looked all over for the solution. Can anyone help?
I'm assuming you are using Word 2004. I have no idea how this works in other
apps, you'll need to ask on those groups (actually, I'd like this for Excel
myself, and my eyes are relatively young in years, old in text passed over).
First--an easy way to set the the zoom to Page Width in a single click.
Word has a predefined command ViewZoomPageWidth. If you go into Tools |
Customize, you can either assign that command a keyboard shortcut, or drag
it to a toolbar or menu. More info if you get lost in that dialog:

Second, it's pretty easy to get the new documents you create to open at a
default zoom.
Open up your Normal template, which is the basis for all default new
documents. Unless you moved it, it should be at:
~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Normal
(~ is standard OS shorthand for YourUserNameAccount)
Change the zoom as desired. Type space, then backspace to get rid of the
space, yet still leave Normal "dirty" and needing to be saved. Save and
Close Normal.
Create a new doc--it should have your desired Zoom. All done.
This won't affect:
1) older documents you previously created.
2) documents other people send you
3) documents based on templates other than Normal.
You could use my first tip whenever you run into any such documents, or you
could force them all to behave. For #3, you would repeat the same procedure
as with Normal for whatever templates you use. A fairly simple macro could
fix #1 and #2 together--if you are willing to get into macros, we can walk
you through that.
