define large and small tables?

Found some helpful answers about how many records Contacts can hold (user currently has 21,000+ contacts) but the answers said 16,384 for small tables and 65,535 for large tables. I did a search on those two terms and can't find a definition. The users will be using Contacts primarily to do mailing (email, mail merge, and FAX) and it might be handy to use the journaling feature to track this. Thanks
