Defining MS Project Fields for use in PWA

Steve

How do I define out of the box fields like "Task Text 1" at the Enterprise
level so that I can use them globally across all projects in Projectserver?

The question arises because the fields are still visible in the PWA View
definition field list but I can't work out how to define them - the menu
option Tools->Customise->Fields is greyed out in MSP 2007 pro when connected
to Projectserver and these fields do not appear as a customisable when using
the Enterprise Custom Field Definition menu in PWA.

Those are local custom fields and are not something that can be defined at
the server level. You can create / define any other fields at the server
level by going to PWA/Server Settings and going to the Enterprise custom
field definition menu. So if you want, you could make a new "Task Text 1
Enterprise" but I’d probably use a more friendly name.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions, Jack.

Question to MVP's

Why have MS chosen to make the upgrade path from Projectserver 2003 to 2007
difficult and why do something that effectively disables very useful
functionality?

Steve,

Migration is a big issue. One thing you can do is to copy and paste from one
column to another.

Hi,

How would MVP's (who areNOT Microsoft personnel!) know WHY MS decides to
retrograde features when making a new release? In the desktop version and in
Project VBA too I can name several... beats me, too.

Hi Steve,

I'm not an MVP, but I'm not sure what's so difficult about this.

They are defined in approx the same way in ProjectServer 2003 as
ProjectServer 2007, ie they are stored in the Enterprise Global Template.
How you get them there is different, but they serve the same purpose in 2003
and 2007 so there are no new concepts. Indeed, if you use the
p12migrationtool.exe then the EGT is the 1st thing that is transfered, moving
these fields across. Now, understanding the difference between local custom
fields and Enterprise Custom fields can be confusing in the 1st instance...

Thank you all for the responses. I apologise for my lack of knowledge on the
relationship between the MVP's and Microsoft.
