Defragging problems w98

I know of four out of five computers that stop the
defrag process at 10%, with a message saying 'Drive
contents changing, Restarting', which it does. The machine
that works required a recovery to correct it. That's a lot
to ask, considering that everything must be reloaded
again. Anyone with experience in this?

Turn of any screensaver, antivirus, and anything else
running except for systray and explorer. Or turn off the
any screensaver and run it from safe mode so that lots of
stuff is not loaded. George
