Degree mark - unicode - Word 2007

On my pc running Windows XP, I can open Word 2007, hold the Alt key, and type
0176. Once I releast the ALT key, I get a degree mark (small circle you put
after a temperature notation.)

However, on my wifes laptop, running Vista and the same application of Word
2007, I get as far as the "01" and a "save as" box pops up! I can't seem to
get past this point.

I then went to PowerPoint, where I figured it "might" work for me, and,
while I don't get the "save as" box, I don't get anything...no degree
symbol...the cursor doesn't even move...nada!!!

Any advice??

The Alt+number shortcuts work only if the NumLock key is turned on and the
numbers are typed on the number pad. Most laptops don't have a number pad,
but instead require you to hold down a "Fn" key to type numbers on a subset
of the regular letter keys. Also, since people almost never use those
numbers, the NumLock is rarely turned on.

Intead, you can type the hexadecimal equivalent of the number -- in this
case, 0176 decimal is equivalent to 00B0 hexadecimal -- and then press
Alt+X. Or you can use the ribbon to click Insert > Symbol > More Symbols and
select the degree symbol there; or, while you're in that dialog, assign a
keyboard shortcut for the symbol.

FWIW, there's a built-in keyboard shortcut for this symbol: Ctrl+@,
Spacebar.
