Delay between typing and characters on screen

Using XP Pro and Office 2003. Several of our PCs have a
distinct lag between the time of keys being pressed and
the characters appearing on the monitor. Very disruptive
to fast typists and aggraqvating to the slow ones like
me. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks,
