delay in downloading mail when O/L starts

When I open Outlook, ie. start it up, there is a delay of some seconds before
it connects to the mail server and begins to download my mail. Why is this?

OE is much quicker.

Depends on the account type and also the loading time of Outlook and
additional add-ins. Note that Outlook has much more to initialize than OE
and that later Outlook versions have a much improved (and quicker)
connection method.
