Delay in opening Word Documents

I am exeriencing about 25 second delay when opening word documents AND
when moving from one open Word document to another on my desktop.

I don't have this problem with opening files for other programs.

I am on a G4/550 lap top running OSX 10.2.8 ( I did all the prior
updates in the required order). I am running Word 10.1.4.

I have run disk utility permission repair.

i have fast save OFF, and always make back ON.

I have tried rebooting.

Any advice? Thanks in advance!

Hi Hunter:

Generically, these problems are usually due to unavailable printers,
templates, or fonts.

When you open a Word document, Word looks in the document to see which was
the last printer used, then attempts to connect to it to obtain the printer
metrics to lay out the display with.

If you take a document that gives you the problem, change printers, then
save the document, is it quicker next time you open? Or if you remove and
re-install your printer does that help?

Same with templates. As part of the opening process, Word attempts to open
and link to the attached template. Look in Tools>Templates and Add-Ins to
see which template is attached. If it's anything other than Normal
template, make sure you have a copy of the required template in your User
Templates folder.

When Word opens a document, it also enumerates all your fonts to ensure that
it has the fonts used in the document available. You may want to look in
the documents to see which fonts are in use, and conduct some font weeding.
Remove all your fonts, from all font folders except the system font folder,
except the ones provided by Apple or Microsoft, and see if that fixes it.

If it does, start putting fonts back in bunches until the problem comes
back.
