delay in text showing up in Text Box

Windows XP and Office XP

Using Word 2002, I have a document with text boxes already in it. The
user can enter text in the text boxes. When the user starts typing in
the text box the first word shows up, but then the next word(s), after a
space, don't show up. You can type away and nothing appears. Or
eventually some text appears after a long delay.

Any idea what is causing the delay?

Could it be related to the creation of a Word crash
recovery file? Autosave? Or related to the above in
respect of Virus scanning software? Might be worth a look,
virus scanning software can cause havoc with Word and
Excel with respect to crash recovery files and autosaving.
Although it is usually accompanied by some form of "can't
save" error message so this is a long shot really.
