DELAYED STARTS EVERY TIME - Office Home and Student 2007

B

Blakelaw

I'm using Office Home and Student 2007, Windows Vista Ultimate OS. The
problem: Starting each individual application in the Office suite takes a
VERY LONG TIME.

When opening each application, I must wait five minutes or more, because the
window labeled "Configuration Progress - Configuring Microsoft Office Home
and Student 2007..." appears first and must complete its business. Once the
green progress bar fills the entire space, the application will finally open,
but it's a maddening wait of several minutes each time.

Occasionally, but not every time, the smaller "Windows installer" window
will appear first, then gives way to the "Configuration progress" window and
progresses as above.

Also occasionally, I will get a very small window that says only
"stdole32.tlb!" (the exclamation point is part of the message in the
window...no other text except for an "OK" button.) Clicking OK makes it go
away and the application is usable afterward. But what is that window trying
to say to me?

I have tried running the Office diagnostics tool, and it turns up nothing
wrong. I have uninstalled and re-installed Office Home and Student 2007, but
this problem remains constant. Does anyone have a solution?

Do you have any other version of MS Office installed? Does this happen
for every single one of all the applications in the suite?

Hello Patrick, and thank you for replying. This happens when I start Excel
and Word. Powerpoint and One Note do not seem to be affected.

As far as other installations of Office, let me first describe my setup for
you. I was beta testing Windows Vista and partitioned my hard drive, so I
could keep my original Windows XP Home installation and boot from either.
Thus I kept my version of Office 2003 on the C drive, but Office 2007 lives
with Vista in its partition. Since the beta I have reinstalled a public
commercial release version of Vista Ultimate in the same partition where the
beta was installed.

I see where you're going with this, I think, but wouldn't the partitioning
and the fact that I installed Office 2007 via Vista and only run it on that
OS keep the Office installations working separately?

Thanks again for your help.

So the Office 2007 under Vista has no idea about Office 2003 under XP?
When you installed the Vista release version, did you reformat the
partition and install Vista from scratch?
What virus scanner are you using?
Did you ever have a beta of Office 2007 or Expression Web installed on
Vista?

I did not reformat to install the Vista release version. I'm using PC-Cillin
Internet Security 15.30.1511. And I did have a beta of Office 2007 but I
uninstalled it before installing the release copy.

There might be some residuals of the beta then left on your system that
are causing those issues. I'd suggest you follow the manual removal
steps linked from my RTM Issues Page (see below my signature). I know
that these steps are for the beta, but they work with the released
version as well.
These steps should get rid of everything related to Office 2007, and
allow you to reinstall your release copy afterwards. I don't know if
this will solve your problem, but it's the best I can think of right
now. It would have been advisable by the way to reformat the partition
that had the Vista beta on it and perform a clean install of Vista RTM.
I suspect that the problems you are experiencing are related in some way
to you upgrading a Vista beta to Vista RTM while having an Office beta
version installed.

Hi, did Patrick's suggestion of manual removal solved your problem? I am
having the same on my PC where I uninstalled a trial version of Office and
installed a licensed version.
