Delegate but Nothing Happens

Hi,

I posted a couple of days ago about permissions, but didn't get a response.

I have set up the permission as per Microsoft. I am testing the following:
Project Manager assigns each department phase to a department head (team lead)
The department head then delegates assignments to his/her team members

I am able to log on as team lead and delegate tasks, specifying to whom I
wish to delegate, etc. and click Send. It all seem fine, but then nothing
else happens.

I have a note by the task and actually got to the point where as PM I could
log on and update the project.

However when I log in as the team member, there is no indication that they
have been assigned the task. When I look at the Project is shows the
originally assigned Team Lead as the resource, myself as PM and no Lead Name.
(I had specified when logged on as the Team Lead that I wanted to stay Team
Lead.)

I have spent hours trying this and to no avail. I would really, really
appreciate some guidance. Thanks so much in advance.

A task delegation request must actually be approved by the PM. Do you see
the task delegation request on your Task Updates page as the PM? Let us
know.

Hi Dale,

Here you are to the rescue again. I was hoping not to bother you!

I don't see it in the Updates when log on as PM.

I also noted that the Team Leads and Team Members don't have Updates. I
assume it's only the PM who does?

I have logged on as a team lead, delegate to team members (and even tried to
delegate to the PM ), but don't see anything in the Updates. No
notifications.

I had modified the permissions for the Team Leads in order for them to
successfully have the Delegate Tasks option and it seems to work from that
end - I can select user(s), options and click Send, but then nothing seems to
result.

Because nothing is showing in the Updates when I log on as PM, nothing
changes in the Project plan.

I'm going crazy with this and really, really appreciate your assistance.

Are you the actual manager of the project in which the Team Lead is
attempting to delegate the tasks? Assuming so, there must be a reason why
these updates are not reaching your Task Updates page. Assuming you are
using Project Server 2003, are you seeing errors in the server's application
Event log? Are there unprocessed packets in the View Drop folder on the
server? We will need you to do some troubleshooting and let us know what
you find.

Hi Dale,

Thanks for your response. Yes, I'm the manager and also have admin rights.

I haven't received any errors either.

I basically created a test project, assigned enterprise resources, published
the project and the project plan/assignments. They received their
assignments with no problem.

I then logged on as a user who has Team Lead and Team Member permission,
selected a task and delegated it to a Team Member.

I go through, selecting the user name, whether I want to retain Team Lead,
and receive update. I say "yes" (although I've tried no as well) and click
send. It indicates that it has updated the PM (me) and the user to whom I
delegated.

However, neither the user nor I get any updates.

I'm just totally stumped, as I'm sure are you. Is there anything else I can
try?

I'm supposed to have this up and running by tomorrow...

Thanks so much for all of your help and advice.

I am absolutely and totally stumped. I can't imagine what is causing this
problem. But then again, you didn't answer a couple of questions I asked
you in my last response. So, let's try this again:

1. Are there errors in the server's application Event log?
2. Are there unprocessed XML packets in the View Drop folder on the server?

If you do not have access to the server hosting Project Server, then get one
of your network administrators to check the server and see if he/she can get
you the answers to the above two questions. Let us know.

HI Dale,

OK, I've been able to log onto the server and yes, I do see errors in the
Event Log. I'm not sure what to pass on to you that would make sense, but
would guess the error number and description, so will go with that:

Error Number 0x80040e57
Description: CDATA Assert Detected. The error code was also included.

The component is pjSvUtl
File - path ends with delegutil.cpp

Does this make any sense to you?

Thanks again. And again. And again, :)

I'm not a technical person, so I'm not sure I can diagnose what the errors
mean. But the fact that you are seeing errors is not a good thing. The one
error you list looks like it deals with task delegation, which is probably
why the task delegation is not being processed. OK, so what about the View
Drop folder on the server hosting Project Server? Something tells me you
will see unprocessed XML packets there. Please check this as well and let
us know what you find. If necessary, we can start a new thread with the
information we have gleaned together from this thread. That way our
technical folks can take a stab at diagnosing and solving your problems.
Let us know.

Dee:

You might want to download the effective rights tool from the resource kit.
It sounds as though you may not have the permissions set correctly. We do
need you answer all of the questions asked and you need to harvest more of
the errors, in their entirety, and post them.
