A partially sighted friend has just telephoned to ask if I can explain why,
as he tries to insert a correction into a Word word, the letter in front or
behind is over written

Quizzing him closely it seems he thinks it is something to do with the
F9-F12 keys which he inadvertently presses sometimes - the same problem
exists in Outlook and he says the prob goes away when he re-boots the
programme - I cannot replicate the prob on Mac or PC

Oh! I should say he is a PC user and so ought to be asking the question
elsewhere!

Any suggestions so he does not have to keep re-booting the programme

There's an Overtype mode, which your friend seems to be in. Usually hitting
the Insert key toggles it. It's very easy to accidentally hit the Insert key
(that's all rumor from the WinWord groups, I sure don't have an Insert key
but that's what they say over there).

In addition, down at the far right of the status bar, there should be an OVR
with a circle next to it. When that circle is green, Overtype mode is on.
You can double click (or maybe single-click the circle, not totally sure)
the OVR to toggle in and out of Overtype mode.

(fyi: there are three other status bar things that work the same way as
OVR--generally you don't want to see any green dots down there).
