Delete cropped areas from picture doesn't work?

I am trying to delete the cropped area from a picture using the compression
tool, but I can still enlarge the crop and see my original picture. Do I
need to make the picture a certian format (i.e. Square, or in front of text).
I have been able to do this successfully in the past, but I recently applied
all service packages to my office programs. Could this have introduced the
problem? Also the original picture is a screen shot from my computer, is
this some kind of wierd format that will not crop?

In my recollection, you've never been able to do that kind of permanent
cropping to a picture directly in Word. If you have Word 2002 or later, you
can use the Office Picture Manager to do it. Prior to that, use Microsoft
Photo Editor.

Actually, I take that back. I had in mind a different kind of editing, and
didn't pick up on your having said you were using the Compress feature.

In Word 2003, you should be able to do it. Right-click the picture and
choose Format Picture. In the Picture tab, click Compress. Maker sure that
Apply to is set to the selected picture, put a check next to Delete cropped
areas of pictures, then click OK.

Here, it does indeed remove the cropped portion of the picture.

(Interestingly enough, I can't get the comparable steps to work in Word
2007.)

I started a new post because I couldn't seem to find this one, but it poped
up when I when I looked for my new one. I have been using the compress
feature in the Office picture manager and it made my file originally go from
almost 1G to 19M. It wasn't until after I installed the service pack 2 for
Word 2003 that I noticed the pictures were no longer having the cropped areas
deleted and I'm not sure they are being compressed to the 200 dpi for
printing. Even when I have applied the delete cropped areas and compress to
all pictures in the document, I can go to some pictures and "uncrop" them and
see the original picture, but if I go back to older pictures, I only see
white when I uncrop them, so I know the delete cropped areas and compress
feature worked at some point and my file size drastically reduced, but I
would like to continue keeping a lid on the file size. Could this be a bug
that was introduced by the service pack? Maybe I should go back to a
computer that hasn't had the service pack installed and see if the compress
will work on it. Any other ideas would be appreciated too. Thanks
(If possible can you delete the new post I started on May 3, 2007 called
"Delete cropped areas of pictures not working")

I did a little more investigation. I went back to my original 100M (not 1G)
document. Using word 2003 (11.8125.8122) SP 2 I went to the compress menu
and selected All pictures, change resolution to print and delete cropped
area. The document reduced in size to 9M! But when I went into the new
document there were a few screen shots that did NOT loose the cropped area.
If you have an email address, I will be happy to send you these screen shots.
Other screen shots like them did get cropped, so I am a little at a loss as
why some did have the cropped part deleted and other didn't. I guess since I
did this with the new service pack in place, the service pack is not the
issue and I looked back at some of my backup files and these same graphics
still had the cropped portions even though I had run delete cropped areas on
all pictures.
