"Delete cropped areas of pictures" does not work

I print screen and paste it in my document then crop it. Then I want to
delete the cropped area by using Compress button, but it doesn't work. It
turns out two ways:
- If I compress by clicking at the compress button on the picture toolbar,
nothing happens
- If I compress by click the compress button in the Format Picture window,
the result is my original pictures before I cropped.
Anyone know what's the problem, please help me! Thanks a lot.

When you put an image into a Word doc you have no control over the actual
size of the image. Your two options are :

A) Stretching (referred to as 'resizing') in order to have the image print
larger or smaller,
B) Cropping, which determines how much of the image displays based on the
dimensions of the 'container' it is in.

Neither of these techniques actually changes the size of the image - IOW, it
is all still there regardless of any amount of resizing or cropping. You
can't 'delete' any of the image content.

If the image file size is causing your document file size to be larger than
you would like the image needs to be modified in a graphics editing program
*before* you insert it into the doc... In fact, it's best if the image is
fully prepared first. Relying on a word processing program to adjust
graphics is just asking for trouble.

The Compress feature has nothing to do with display or print dimensions of
the image - it somewhat reduces the amount of image data stored in the Word
file by removing certain types of content that Word has no use for.

But I mean is that, normally, when you crop a picture, the cropped area still
there, right? And it can be deleted by tick the check box in front of "Delete
cropped areas of pictures" whlie compressing the picture. However, it used to
work, which reduced the file size a lot. But when I try to use it again
today, it doesn't work. Does anyone know what cause the problem?

I believe this is a bug. I have Word 2002 at home and it behaves exactly as
you describe. At work I have Word 2003 and when I crop a picture and use the
delete/compress options, the file size is reduced.
