delete cropped areas of pictures not working

I have been pasting screen shots into a word document and cropping them down
to the part I want. Recently I installed the service pack 2 for Word2003 and
now, when I try to delete the cropped areas of my pictures it does not work.
Any suggestions for deleting the cropped areas? I also would like to reduce
the resolution, but I'm not sure that's working either.
