Delete extra note reference mark.

I remote-connected to a client's computer, after a Page Break
"a._____________" appears on the bottom. The (a.) doesn't appear when I open
the document but it is clearly seen in the client's view in Word. How do I
modify or delete the extra footnote indicator? I am thinking the client's
file maybe corrupted. Please help or ideas is greatly appreciated.

Client: WinXP/Word 2000

Just to rule out the obvious, I assume you do not mean a Page Break
Formatting Mark? If the line disappears when the Paragraph button on the
Standard toolbar is up (or Tools, Options, View tab, Formatting marks, All
is unselected), then this is just a visual indication that a page break has
been inserted and will not appear on the printed version.
If the document is corrupted, then I've generally found performing a Save As
RTF, and then reloading the saved file, sorts out most problems with little
effect on the formatting of the document.
Regards,
David.

Can you clarify exactly what the client is seeing? From your example, it
appears that there is a Footnote Separator numbered with a letter. This may
indicate that the Footnote Separator has acquired numbering or a numbered
style.

But if the separator appears when there are (or are supposed to be) no
footnotes on the page, this suggests that there is some vestige of a
footnote that hasn't been deleted. Try setting the Browse Object to Footnote
and the browse arrows to look for a hidden footnote reference on the page
(or use Ctrl+G to open the Go To dialog and select Footnote). Just
displaying nonprinting characters might do the trick if the reference mark
is just formatted as Hidden. In any case, this reference mark in the
document text must be removed in order to get rid of the Footnote Separator
at the bottom of the page.
