Delete functions have changed

I used to be able to delete highlighted text by hitting
the backspace button or by simply typing new
information. Now, the only way I can get highlighted
text to delete is to actually hit the delete key. What
has changed that prevents my being able to delete text
using backspace or by typing when text to be deleted is
highlighted?

Tools | Options | Edit: check the box for "Typing replaces selection."
