Delete more than one letter

I recently received a new monitor at work, and since it was installed (they
did not install the driver), whenever I highlight a string of text, such as a
work or sentence, or paragraph, and hit delete nothing happens. A message
appears at the bottom of the screen asking if I want to delete (something)
and gives a yes no option. If I hit Y, it will delete the highlighted
material. Previous, I could just highlight and hit the delete key and be rid
of what I wanted. It still allows me to delete letter by letter, but that is
tiresome and aggravating. The delete and y key just adds extra key strokes,
which as a sufferer of carpal tunnel, I do not need. None of my coworkers
whose monitors were installed at the same time can help and the IT people
have not a clue what is causing the problem. Help! Please!

Thank you for help. I followed the link and was able to get the delete key
to clear more than one letter at a time. However, when it would do that, it
would then not clear anything just hitting it. I had to backspace to clear
single letter and actions I did not want...what a frustrating way of doing
things. So, how do I get the delete key to always work like it did
before...meaning deleting whatever I want it to delete whether it is one item
or a string of items? I cannot tell you how frustrated I am with this
"improved" equipment. Thank you for any help you can provide.

If you have disabled the WordPerfect options, you should be able to delete
selected text with one press of the Delete key, and there is no reason it
should not still work as before to delete one letter at a time, moving
forward (the Backspace key deletes backward).

What version of Word are you using? It sounds like you have "Typing replaces
selected text" or "Typing replaces selection" turned off. Suzanne's article
at the mvps.org site provided instructions for enabling this setting in both
Word 2003 (and earlier) and Word 2007.
