Delete not working

I am in a word document and when I try to delete by backspacing, the curser
moves forward. WHen I try to highlight and then delete, it doesn't work.
What is causing this?

In Word 2003 or earlier, click on Tools | Options | Edit tab | check the
"Typing replaces selection" box | OK.

In Word 2007, click on Office Button | Word Options | Advanced | check
the "Typing replaces selected text" box | OK.
