Delete page number on the first page of each chapter

Hi,

Please pardon my stupidity. My dissertation was just returned for a page
number formatting problem. I have 5 chapters in my dissertation and I need
to be able to delete page number on the first page of each chapter. How do I
delete the page number from the first page of each chapter and still have the
rest of the numbering correct? And no, I did not auto-chapter each section I
used.

Insert a Next Page (or Odd Page, if you prefer) break before the beginning
of each chapter. Enable "Different first page" (Layout tab of Page Setup)
and then delete the page number (if any) from the First Page Header/Footer.

Rick,
If each chapter is an separate section, you could use a different
header/footer for the first page and leave it empty and put your numbering
in the header of each section. With the header and footer toolbar active,
click on the Page Setup button choose the Layout tab - check different first
page. That will give you a different header for the first page of the
section. Repeat for the next sections.

Thank you Suzanne. I already successfully defended itabout a month aga. I
made the small changes suggested by the committee. The Department Chair
kicked it back for the page numbering problem. I already fixed it and sent
it back. So, when I said it was the only thing between me and my Ph.D., I
meant it literally. Thanks again for your kind words and even kinder
solution!

Interesting. I can't recall whether my husband defended his dissertation
before the final typing or not, but the computer has certainly changed
procedures since we got our graduate degrees in 1968, 1972, and 1975.
Researching and writing my thesis took several quarters, but it seems like
typing it took most of another! (Especially if you count all the canary
yellow versions before the final draft on the special ruled thesis paper.)
