Delete zip codes from the front of phone numbers in contacts?

When I put new numbers into Contacts, they automatically are preceded by the
zip code of the phone number. I'm assuming there's a default somewhere. It
didn't used to happen, it just started a couple of months ago.
When I download into my IPhone, the zip code is there and I have to manually
delete the zip before I can place my call.
