Have a simple problem: how do I delete an item from a Word file list?
Huh?

I have a feeling that you are using File | Open or File | Save in Word and
trying to delete a word file from the list you see there. This works in
Windows. It does not work on the Mac. You'll need to find the file in the
Finder, and then delete it by dragging to the trash or various other ways of
getting it to the trash.

(for big files, be aware that the file is not really gone and the space
reclaimed until you use Finder | Empty Trash.)

If that wasn't what you meant, ask again. :)

It did in Word 5.1 <deep nostalgic sigh>, and that expectation may linger
among those highly principled people who have taken so long to change. :)

Yeah, well I think it's time to start nagging them for it to be reinstated
:)

Mind you, it's Apple that may have to do it. I just discovered that it
doesn't work in TextEdit either...

All of Word's file dialogs are actually Finder windows. Microsoft Office
does not do its own file manipulation, it calls the operating system: what
you see presented as a "Word" dialog is actually a cut-down Finder window.

Same on the PC: A File dialog is actually a cut-down Windows Explorer
window. Windows Explorer allows deletes and renames during Open and Save,
Mac OS X Finder doesn't...

Cheers

Hi John -

As usual you're spot on here... Adobe apps provide two Open/Save As dialogs
- theirs & Apple's. The Adobe dialog enables both a Cmd+Delete as well as a
Ctrl+Click>Delete for files & folders. If you switch to the Apple dialog
both options go bye-bye & there are none (that I've found) to replace them.
